Here and Now: A Look Back at 2008

Here and Now looks back at the memorable issues of 2008 including an historic election. The program also features interviews with former Arizona senator Dennis Deconcini, Phoenix civil leader Dick Mallery, Barry Goldwater Jr and John Dean, and entertainment entreprenuer Todd MacFarlane.

Here and Now: City Budgets/Congress

KJZZ's Here and Now looked at the impact the declining economy is having on the budgets of local cities. Host Steve Goldstein also talked to candidates in congressional districts 1 and 5. KJZZ's Mark Brodie also joined Goldstein to profile the race in congressional district 8.

Deciding School Unification

Though much attention is fixed on the presidential race this election season, voters in 76 Arizona school districts will have to decide whether to merge, or unify, with each other. As KJZZ's Tony Ganzer reports, the proposal is ambitious, but may be too controversial to pass.

Voters will decide Proposition 102 on November 4th. The measure amends the Arizona Constitution to ban gay marriage.

Voting Early

This is the first day Arizona voters can cast ballots in the November General Election. Arizona is one of 33 states that allows Early Voting. The practice began in Maricopa County in 1996 when only 14% of voters voted early, but the Early Voting is attracting more and more voters. This morning we hear from David Schwartz, a political consultant with Goodman-Schwartz Public Affairs.

As the presidential election approaches, it's looking more and more as though the economy will be the deciding issue for many voters. On the eve of primaries in Kentucky and Oregon, we're going to meet an Arizona man who has been on the presidential campaign trail for a year and three days. He's 24-year-old Danny Friedman. He used to work for the state Democratic Party but since last May, he's been criss-crossing the country for his candidate of choice, Senator Hillary Clinton. He's one of a countless number of idealistic, young and hungry political junkies who work day in and day out for their candidate.

Meet AZ's Undeclared Superdelegates

With six months until the presidential election, it's still not completely clear who the contestants will be, at least on the Democratic side. And for the first time in recent memory, the choice could come down to about 800 people known as superdelegates. They're delegates to the national convention whose votes are not bound by the party's primaries. We have 11 Democratic superdelegates in Arizona, and they include elected officials and party leaders. Of the 11, seven have already declared their support for a candidate. Four for Clinton. Three for Obama. So this morning, we'll focus now on the four superdelegates who are still undeclared. KJZZ's Rene Gutel reports.

Here & Now - Rep. Mitchell - Elections

Congressman Harry Mitchell discussed the cost of the Iraq War and the care of veterans on Here and Now. Mitchell also talking about the problems with a border fence and congress' role in helping improve the economy. Local civics leader Bart Turner came on to talk about an effort to have voters rank their candidate choices when they vote, sparing runoff elections. John Koza discussed a national effort to use the popular vote instead of the electoral college to elect the president.

After Super Tuesday's primaries and caucuses, Arizona Senator John McCain has established himself as the Republican Presidential frontrunner. As KJZZ's Steve Goldstein reports, some previously-opposed conservatives are likely to embrace--or at least support--McCain now.
