The Chandler Roundup: 10 Years Later

 


Ten years ago Chandler Police and Border Patrol conducted a five day joint operation that ended in the arrest and deportation of 432 undocumented immigrants. In the process, Chandler Police stopped people and cars without probable cause and asked legal residents for proof of citizenship. The city ultimately settled a federal civil rights lawsuit for those stops. KJZZ looks back at "The Chandler Roundup" in a special three part series beginning Monday at 6:30 and 8:30 during Morning Edition.

Darkest Days In The Distance
A decade ago this week, Chandler Police and Federal Immigration Officers swept through the town looking to arrest and deport undocumented immigrants. In the process, they also stopped to question legal residents and U.S. Citizens who either spoke Spanish or looked 'Mexican.' KJZZ's Marcos Najera concludes a 3-part series on the Chandler Roundup with a report on the city's efforts to move past its darkest days.

Here and Now: Police & Immigration
Here and Now tackles the growing trend of local police enforcing federal immigration law. First, the program looks back at the lessons learned from the 'Chandler Roundup.' Ten years ago. Chandler police were sued after an immigration sweep resulted in the stopping of anyone who looked 'Mexican.' Here and Now also looks at concerns surrounding a new 'Illegal Immigrant Hotline" and the growing trend of police seeking training to enforce federal immigration law.

Chandler Roundup: What Went Wrong
