A Latino activist group wants the Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board to investigate the dismissal of a charter high school principal. Yvonne Watterson was fired last month as the principal of the Gateway Early College High School, which is associated with Gateway Community College. Of the schools nearly 200 students, many are Latino and some are undocumented. Now, several local Latino leaders are calling her termination unjust and they want to know why she was let go. A potential lawsuit in Tucson could threaten a classroom program designed to educate Latino kids. It's called Raza Studies. This week, supporters of the controversial program, which has been labeled by some as anti-American, urged the Tucson Unified School District's governing board to protect the classes. The program does have its critics. But many Latino students themselves say the program is just what they need. KJZZ's Marcos Najera went inside Tucson High School and filed this report.
