Compromise Over Sun Merc Building Pleases Few
( Phoenix, AZ )Members of Phoenix's Asian-American community are unhappy with the city council's decision last night to allow construction of a hotel and condo complex on top of the historic Sun Mercantile building downtown. The two story brick structure is the last landmark of the city's old Chinatown. It's right next to the America West Arena, and owners of the Phoenix Suns want to build an eleven story above it. The City Council tried to craft a compromise but neither side is too pleased with the result. KJZZ's Rene Gutel reports.

( Phoenix, AZ )In this installment of Here and Now, Governor Napolitano joined us. We looked ahead to the upcoming legislative session, new education initiatives and English learner legislation. We also looked at how the federal government is putting more resources on the border and promising to change its catch and release policy for illegal immigrants. Additionally, we discussed how several cities have passed legislation making it tougher to buy the ingredients needed to make methamphetamines and whether similar laws should be adopted statewide.

"Hotel Rwanda" Manager Speaks Against Genocide
( Phoenix, AZ )The man whose story was told in the Academy Award-nominated movie, Hotel Rwanda, has wrapped up a series of speaking engagements in Arizona. Paul Rusesabagina is touring the country speaking to high school and college students. Yesterday morning he talked to several hundred teenagers in north Phoenix. KJZZ's Rene Gutel was there.

Jerome Resists Jeep Tours
( Jerome, AZ )A Sedona jeep tour operator wants to expand his business and open a tour company in Jerome, the historic copper mining town perched on the side of Mingus Mountain between Prescott and Flagstaff. Jerome has a population of about 450, and draws tourists from around the country, who walk up the town's steep streets, and shop in its art boutiques. A jeep tour business may seem like a simple addition to the town, but as KJZZ's Rene Gutel reports, the road is bumpy.
